DRESSES NEEDED! Many requests for dresses!

Well, the Christmas season is upon us and I have just had 4 requests for dresses from 4 different organizations taking missions trips between now and February!

Ladies, start your sewing machines!  I need help.  I know everyone is busy at this time of year, I am as well.  If you have any dresses you have sewn or started, could you try to finish them and get them to me asap?  If you have time, could you sew a few up for me?

Help us bless girls this Christmas!
I was so thankful when a woman called me out of the blue just a couple weeks ago.  It was days before her trip to Mozambique and she just heard about DAGATW.  She wanted dresses for the next week.  I had a couple of large boxes that I was tripping over in my sewing studio and was thrilled to send them with her to bless little girls for Christmas!

Now I have no finished dresses and have a student from Fordham University that would like some for a trip soon.  She is coming home to CT around December 20th and I told her I'd have dresses.  Another gentleman just contacted me this morning that he has a trip in early January and needs dresses by December 29th!

I know God will guide us to get these done.  I am asking for your help.  I planned an impromptu sewing date TONIGHT, December 11th at Cornerstone Church in Cheshire from 7-9pm if anyone can join us to help.  The address is 1146 Waterbury Road in Cheshire.  Come with your sewing machine and any supplies you may have.  Any financial donations are welcome as well and are 100% tax deductible.  Checks should me made payable to "Cornerstone Church-Dress a Girl ministry".

Thank you and I hope to see you tonight!

Dress a Girl gets national exposure with TV interview on "The Better Show"

This past fall I was asked if I would like to be featured on "The Better Show" for a segment they call "Women Who Inspire."  I had the opportunity to travel into NYC to do an interview with Audra Lowe of "The Better Show" about Dress a Girl Around the World.  It was lots of fun and I really enjoyed being able to talk about DAG knowing how many people would be able to see what we are doing to help bless little girls with their own pretty pillowcase dress!  What a great opportunity to share!

If you are interested in helping, please respond in the comments below or email me at dressagirlct@gmail.com.

We are always in need of financial help to purchase those things that are not donated such as trimmings, labels, postage and supplies.  100% of your donations are used for Dress a Girl Connecticut as we seek to bless girls worldwide.  If you can help us, please click the "DONATE" button on the top right of this page.  Help us brighten a little girls Christmas this year.

How to make your own pretty bias tape!

Unlimited fabric pattern options!!! Love them!

I have had several requests for tutorials on how to make your own pretty bias tape.  We all know how expensive it can be to purchase.  Making it is so inexpensive and you can get many yards of bias tape from just one yard of pretty cotton fabric!  Here are a couple links to sites with good tutorials!

SEW pretty!

This site has a printable card for feeding your strip of fabric into!

If you try any of these out, please post pictures for me!  I tried it a few times and it is simple but time consuming.  The up side is that it is super inexpensive and they are sooo much prettier than the plain colored ones we can buy in the stores!

Dress a Girl Connecticut is 2 years old! New sewing date this weekend!

Dresses made in Connecticut bless girls in Romania!
Dress a Girl Connecticut has been sewing and blessing girls for two years now!  How we have grown in just two years!  It started a small group of 25 women sewing at my church, Cornerstone Church in Cheshire.  We have grown to well over 200 across New England that have helped in some way!  Small groups of friends are coming together to sew in their homes, churches and clubs and then sending finished dresses to me.  I am humbled and touched at how this affects those that hear what we are doing to bless little girls worldwide.  I love that it moves them to get involved and make a difference in the life of a girl!  Girls are shown love when blessed by their very own handmade pillowcase dress.  They feel pretty and smile ear to ear when blessed.  Their self esteem is raised.  That is a wonderful thing!

There is a lot happening now with Dress a Girl Around the World!  We are currently sewing dresses nationwide to go to Cambodia in the fall.  We have a request for 10,000 dresses and the deadline to ship them to the port in South Carolina is the end of August.  We have sent about 500 so far from Dress a Girl Connecticut!  Keep sewing!

I would like to invite you all to our next sewing event.  We can fit about 60 so if you think you can make it, please RSVP to me as soon as possible. Come for some of the time or join us for the whole time.  If you sew, bring your machine and thread and we will set you up to sew.  If not, bring an iron and ironing board, sharp scissors, pins, PILLOWCASES, or a dish to share at lunchtime.  We will be working and having fun too!  Bring a friend if you'd like!

In June, I attended our first Dress a Girl Around the World conference in Arizona.  I'd like to share with you how our mission is changing from simply providing a pretty dress to a girl who may not have one to blessing a girl with God's BEST.  This means the dress must meet some criteria that we feel is very important.  Here's a wrap-up:
  • Always start with pretty, clean pillowcases and materials.  Think to yourself, would I wear this or put it on my own daughter/granddaughter?  The material/pillowcase must NOT BE SEE THROUGH.  The test is, if you can hold your hand under a single layer of the material and you can see the outline of your hand, it is too see through.  Consider lining dresses with any thin materials/pillowcases you have or use these materials to make bias tape.  We want to respect the modesty and dignity of the girl.  This may also protect her from would be predators.
  • The dress MUST BE CONSTRUCTED IN A DURABLE manner using proper materials.  Please remember these dresses may often be washed in rivers on rocks or on washboards with harsh homemade soaps.  There may be no delicate cycle in many cases!  Back stitch when beginning to sew and when ending your stitches.  Hide raw edges to prevent fraying and unraveling over time.  This can be done by serging edges, sewing french seams or encasing raw edges in a double fold.  When making a dress that is 36" or longer, please make a kick pleat at the bottom (side or middle) so the girl can run and play without having to hike her dress up.
  • We have found that making the elastic pieces one inch (1") wider for the back of the dress fits the girl better.  We generally use 3/8"-3/4" elastics.  Be sure and tack them in place (backstitching) to ensure they will not fall out before you apply bias tape straps.
  • Armholes should be cut between 3"-5" in from the top edge and down from the top of the pillowcase or fabric.  Do not make them any longer or deeper a cut or the straps will not be long enough and the girls chest may be exposed.
  • Straps should be made of DOUBLE FOLD WIDE (1/2") BIAS TAPE or grosgrain ribbon.  When using grosgrain ribbon, use FRAY CHECK on ends to prevent raveling.  Stitch the ribbon in place on the casing so that ribbons aren't pulled out and not able to be re-inserted.  Do not use craft ribbon as this is not soft, can fray and is not washable.  Never use wired ribbon or rope of any kind.  Make sure the straps are long enough to go over the girls shoulder and tie in a bow!  Too often we receive dresses that are beautiful otherwise but cannot be used because the straps are too short to tie a bow.  A good rule of thumb is to make your straps a FULL 36" each no matter the size dress!  When sewing straps on, start at one end, folding in edges, backstitch, and sew to the opposite end, folding in edges, backstitch.
  • Extra touches make the dress even more special.  Add good sized pockets-minimum 5" wide- (girls love to carry little things around in pockets!), trim such as ric rac, and sewn on bows.  Ruffles are pretty too.  Buttons can be used decoratively as long as they are sewn on sturdily.  Please, NO hot glued items adhered to the dress.  They can fall off over time.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for your prayers, donating supplies, money for buying supplies and shipping costs, time for helping out, prepping materials, sewing, rolling and bagging, packing and shipping dresses.  It is all of you who make Dress a Girl a success.  To date, Dress a Girl Around the World has blessed over 101,000 girls with our pillowcase dresses in 59 different countries.  We have people sewing in all states of the US, in the UK, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Australia, Canada and Uganda.  There are many more girls out there waiting for a dress of their very own, so please keep sewing!

I feel like the more I share what we are doing, the more girls will be blessed.  I would love to come and share what Dress a Girl is doing with your church, group, or organization.  Please contact me to schedule a convenient time.  Also, we are in need of financial contributions to help with supplies and shipping to our contacts.  If you feel you can help out in any way, please make checks payable to Cornerstone Church-Dress a Girl Ministry and mail to Cornerstone Church, 1146 Waterbury Road, Cheshire, CT  06410 (this is a tax deductible donation) or bring to our next sewing event!  I hope to see you there and meet more of you all in person!  If you have not gotten involved and would like to, call or email me with any questions you have!

Please continue to keep Dress a Girl Connecticut in your prayers.

I am honored to have been asked to partner with a fabulous woman's boutique ~BK & Co~ in West Hartford Center this weekend for the West Hartford Spring StrollClick here for more information!

They seek to bring attention to charities that business owners in West Hartford support.  It is a wonderful opportunity for me to share Dress a Girl with even more people and perhaps get more people involved in donating and sewing!  This just means more girls will be blessed with dresses!

I will be selling pillowcase dresses for $25 to raise money for shipping dresses and to help buy more supplies to bless more girls.  100% of the money will go back into Dress a Girl!  It is a wonderful way for me to raise money and for you to out one of our cute dresses on a little girl in your life.  Walking advertising too!  Just share where the dress came from and how your money has dressed that many more girls!

Think you'd like to help sewing dresses?  I will also have kits available for $5.  Kits include a pillowcase or fabric sewn into a pillowcase form; all the notions needed to make the dress, directions and an address for you to send the finished dress back to me.  In this way, you can sew a dress, donate a small amount and bless a girl.  If you find you enjoy it and want to continue, you can start collecting pillowcases and supplies needed to sew the dresses!  I am always in need of more help sewing!

Please come out and support Dress a Girl Connecticut!  I look forward to meeting you!

Blessed by Delta Kappa Gamma Lamda chapter!

Last night I was the guest speaker at the Lamda chapter of a Delta Kappa Gamma meeting.  DKG is a a group of key women educators impacting education worldwide.

Here is the link to find out more about this wonderful group: www.deltakappagamma.org/ct.

These are the purposes of the group listed on their website:

To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship;
To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education;
To advance the professional interest and position of women in education;
To initiate, endorse and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators;
To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators;
To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourge their participation in appropriate programs of action; and
To inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.

This was really fun for me to share with them what Hope 4 Women International and Hope 4 Kids is all about and most of all...what Dress a Girl Around the World is!  It went well and was very well received!  Many of the women were moved to donate on the spot and I collected just over $100 to help pay for supplies and ship more dresses to David Wagner of Father's Heart Ministries in Florida! What a blessing as I have about 700 dresses ready to ship!

Even better, many took a copy of the dress instructions and seemed interested in making dresses on their own or with sewing groups they are part of!  I told them I would email them once we had our next sewing date scheduled.  Most women live fairly close to our town and many are in it!  I always need more help sewing so that would be really nice.

I so appreciate offers of help whether it is financial, offers of supply donations or help constructing dresses!  No sewing experience is necessary and I will help you if you need/want to learn how to use a sewing machine.  Please share this website and my Facebook page with your friends that they may also learn what Dress a Girl Connecticut is doing to bless little girls around the world!

It's a New Year!

Happy New Year!

Christmas & New Years are behind us and I am looking forward to all 2012 will hold for Dress a Girl Connecticut!  What a wonderful year 2011 was for us and I just know God has great things in store for us this year!

I am looking forward to a busy year in sharing what Dress a Girl Around the World is doing and how people in Connecticut and nearby can help with Dress a Girl Connecticut in blessing girls with their own pretty dress!

I am starting to plan events for the year as well.  If you'd like to plan one of your own, I am happy to help!  Just contact me at dressagirlct@gmail.com for more information!

I am always looking for people who are traveling to countries where there is a need for these dresses.  Maybe someone from your church is going on a missions trip?  We can provide you with as many dresses as you can carry with you!  All we ask for is that you take photos of the girls receiving or wearing the dresses so that it can be shared with those that sew.  It is "SEW" inspiring for us all!  It brings us great joy to see the smiles on the faces of little girls whose self esteem has been raised and spirits lifted to simply receive a pretty new handmade dress of their own.

If you would like to help but don't know how to sew, there are many other ways you can help.  We always need donations of supplies.

Here is a list of items we need constantly:

  • Double bias tape:  We use 1/2" width double bias tape.  Each dress requires 2 pieces of 1 yard each for the straps.  This gets very expensive to buy and I always welcome donations!  We love colorful double bias tape!
  • Elastic:  We use 3/8" braided elastic in the front and back of the dresses.  Each dress requires two 7" pieces.  We can use white or black elastic.
  • Pillowcases:  New or used but in good condition.  Standard, Queen and King sizes.  Any colors and patterns.  We prefer not to use white as it can be see through and we want the girls to feel secure and safe in them.  However, these can be dyed or tie-dyed!
  • Fabric in large pieces:  Lightweight cotton and cotton blends of fabrics in any color or pattern so long as it isn't see through.  Keep in mind that most of these dresses end up in very warm weather places so heavy fabrics or materials that aren't appropriate for these conditions aren't the best choices.
Of course, monetary donations are always welcome as I am often buying supplies in stores and in bulk on the internet.  A roll of bulk elastic costs me $25 and will make about 370 dresses!  A bulk of double bias tape costs me $50 and this will make about 70 dresses!  Please see the link to donate at the top of this blog-(a yellow button) through my Paypal account.  100% of your donation will be used for Dress a Girl Connecticut supplies for dresses!

Perhaps you'd like to come to a Sew-a-Long and learn how to cut, sew (It's really easy),  pin, or iron.  Let me know and I will do my best to include you in an event!

A girl in Uganda was just told she'd be receiving her first new dress!  Look at that smile!
Think about the smiles on the girls faces, as above, when they learn they are about to receive a gift of a brand new dress-handmade with love!  No more rags-just a pretty new dress!  Awesome!

Thanks for listening!  Hope to see you at an event this year or perhaps hear how you'd like to help us bless little girls!

May your 2012 be a very blessed one as well!

Back in Connecticut & Back on track!

It's been a wonderful summer so far!  My daughter's 11th birthday was the last day of school and we had a big Hawaiian Luau party/sleepover.  I think everyone had lots of fun.  There were lots of giggles and smiling going on so I suspect so.  That kicked off summer for us!

Kaeleigh (front/center) with friends.

Then the very next day, we were off to the Cape for just about the next month or so.  We are very blessed to be able to spend lots of time in a beautiful spot in Cape Cod, MA.  Every year we have the most amazing time away and form the most precious of family memories.  Not only with our immediate family, but with extended family as well.  Nothing beats it!  This year included surfing lessons for the kids and lots of time with local friends-new and old!  Our scrapbook from the Summer of 2011 in Cape Cod will be very full indeed!  It was a wonderful escape from the everyday routines and responsibilities.
Kaeleigh, Andrew & Ryan taking a break from surfing to watch the seals.
Now we are back in Connecticut and settling back into a routine here.  Reaching out to friends, setting up playdates and just getting caught up.  Back to tending to gardens, working on finishing the basement and oh, Dress a Girl!  I brought some things to work on to the Cape and had the best of intentions to work on making double bias tape while on vacation this year, but we were having too much fun in other ways and I was just too beat at night to conquer it!

Two days ago I was talking to a friend about my guilt in not have done anything for Dress a Girl in the last month (except answer a few emails).  She told me it is good to have a break from something you love-that when you go back to it, you will enjoy and appreciate it all the more.  I think she's right!

Yesterday, my mom came down for the day to help me get a jump start to getting back on track with making pillowcase dresses.  What a blessing that was!  She was the one who got me into sewing in the first place and when I saw her last on Father's Day, I sent her home with a huge bag of donated hospital gowns in cute colors and patterns.   Yesterday, she brought over about 20 dresses that she made from that material.  They are even cuter than I imagined!!  That in itself got me excited to get moving again!  We finished about 35 dresses that were started and got about 20 more moved further down the road to completion!  I made about 20 yards of double bias tape and ironed in labels in alot of dresses!  It was a great day with Mom and great for cranking through the dresses as well!
Dad & Mom
Now I am ready to go!  I really want to get through alot of the donations I already have to make space for new donations!  I have lots of fabric and sheets that I need to get cut into dresses.  I am looking for people to help me.  I will provide you with supplies and fabric to make the pillowcase dresses.  I will give you step by step instructions if needed and even show you how to construct the dresses.  The long and short of it is this-- I need more helpers!  I would love company so if you'd like to come over for a few hours to help, I'd welcome it!  If you like it and want to continue helping at home, that would be great!  But I know how busy life gets.  So if you can just donate a few hours to help, I'll take it!
Haitian girl that just received a pillowcase dress-This is why we sew!
As much as I miss the Cape, it feels good to be back in Connecticut & good to be back on track with Dress a Girl!

Another mystery donation appears!

Today I noticed my "donation" bin that is in my driveway was nearly full with pretty cotton fabrics!  Just want to thank whoever filled it up for me!  I am always touched by the generosity of people who donate to good causes!  Can't wait to get stitching!  I think tonight I will stop the mulching & planting I was doing, shower & get sewing!  After all, I have friends who help sew that are waiting on dresses from me to be completed!  Don't want to let them down!  Thanks again mystery donator!

Support Dress a Girl Connecticut

Sew, I became involved in Dress a Girl Around the World last fall when a dear woman at our church, Pauline-(love her!)-found out about DAG & wanted to help by hosting a sewing event.  From there, I have been on a wild ride that I know God has put me on and is directing my way.  When I decided to become the CT state rep for DAG, I prayed that if I took this on, that God would allow this all to unfold at a pace I can handle without becoming overwhelmed and that He would provide and open doors to help me be successful in blessing little girls internationally with a beautiful handmade dress.

God is so good!  To date, everything is going great!  I have lots of women who just "find" me through this blog, my Dress a Girl Connecticut Facebook page or through word of mouth.  Daily they call and write and seek me out to ask if they can help-whether that is through sewing, donating, organizing or distributing dresses!  It really is incredible.  Now churches and organizations are calling asking if I will come speak at their gatherings to tell them about Dress a Girl.  You may remember that I posted in February that I was invited to speak at the New England Prayer Center's Conference on Inspiration.  At that conference, I was asked by a pastor in Florida to provide him with 10,000 dresses by July.  He is traveling with teams to Africa and South America this summer and wants to help us bless little girls in those countries!  I just have to get the dresses to him and he will bring and ship them to his contacts in Africa and South America.

So many people have been helping to donate pillowcases and fabric and even more are sewing!  We are chipping away at the number!  Our DAGATW founder, Rachel, was gracious enough to commit to 5,000 of the dresses we need from her warehouse in Arizona!  Thanks Rachel!

I am at a point where I am ready to send boxes of dresses to the pastor in Florida and need help in funding for shipping.  There are two ways you can help donate to this.  First, you can write a tax deductible donation check to Cornerstone Church-Dress a Girl and mail it to Cornerstone Church, 1146 Waterbury Road, Cheshire, CT  06410.  Also, I now have a way to donate online through Paypal.  You can use a credit card this way.  On the top right of my blog home page, click on the "Donate" button.  Any amount is appreciated and all money will be used for Dress a Girl!

For more information just contact me!  I love to share what Dress a Girl Around the World is doing!

Thanks & God Bless!

Start your engines (or sewing machines!)

Ladies, the Gordon College trip to Nicaragua was a huge success and has prompted a ripple effect!  One of the professors that went on the trip is going to Honduras in May and is asking for dresses for that trip.  She doesn't have an exact number yet, but we are starting with assuming 100 pillowcase dresses.  There are actually two groups going so we will wait and see how many we actually need.  However, couple that with the 10,000 dresses we are sewing for David Wagner of Father's Heart Ministries & well, yikes!

So, if you can sew and would like to help a great cause in providing a dress for a little girl internationally, please help!  We need lots of dresses!  Which also means we need lots of pillowcases & sheets, elastic, ribbon and bias tape!

Don't know how to sew and want to help?  There are lots of ways!
  • Do a pillowcase drive among your friends, neighbors and co-workers.  Wash them as they come in and then drop them off with me.
  • Come to our next sewing event April 1st at Cornerstone Church in Cheshire.
  • Start your own sewing circle or event.
  • When going to yard/tag sales, ask if they'd donate sheets, pillowcases or fabric to our DAGATW.
Thanks for stopping by and please consider helping.  Even sharing this blog with your friends via Facebook or email will raise awareness and possibly prompt someone to help out!

Have a blessed day!  (And start your engines!)

Sheets, sheets, & loads of donated fabric!

Today I spent most of the day cutting sheets, sheets, and more sheets into various dress sized "pillowcases", then serged many of them together to into the pillowcase form.  It is unending!  I have so many sheets!  I am feeling a bit buried in sheets!  It's a wonderful "problem"!  And of course we need so many more!  I am using them for dresses and some for making into bias tape.  If you have some that you don't really use, consider donating them.  I really would appreciate it!

Today I also tackled a box of fabric that my 2nd cousin Cheryl sent to me a couple of months ago.  I know, I am a little slow. LOL!  The pillowcases are easier (there is less to do in order to make them into a dress), so I tend to work with those first.  However, since my husband and I are currently framing half of our basement into a finished space, I am losing precious storage space and have to work through all my boxes!  And when I pull those boxes out of all the "hidden" places in our basement-Holy Cow do I have alot of boxes!  My husband nearly had a stroke when he saw how the piles grew as I consolidated it all into one area! ;)

Anyway, in the box that Cheryl sent me was yards of fabric that she intended to sew into cute clothes for her little girls. (They are now graduated high school and college!)  I am guilty of it too.  I have dressers (yes, plural) full of flannels and fleece from years of making tons of pajama pants for the kids and plenty of fabrics from other well intended, never gotten to projects!

So, maybe you are in the same situation as Cheryl and I?  Maybe you have fabric laying around from those projects you meant to do; quilts never started or finished; clothes for the kids that they'd never wear now that they are older and it's not cool to wear something mom made unless it's Halloween (my kids).  Let me know and I will be happy to take that fabric off your hands and you can know it is going to a good cause.  Cheryl's fabric was cut into 49 dresses today!  Just awesome!  Oh and all those sheets too.  I am going to be busy!

Spreading the love

It's Sunday evening and tonight we had dinner with my father in law and his significant other.  They asked about Dress a Girl and what's new.  I love to share what is starting to happen here in Connecticut and the Northeast!  They had no idea how busy we've been and how big things are getting.  I told him that I'd driven 180 dresses out to Boston so his granddaughter, Mary, could bring them to Nicaragua for me!  He was very proud!  They themselves just came back from Costa Rica last week.  Had I known they were going in advance, I would have sent a few dresses with them!

I showed them pictures of the dresses and of the little girls of Uganda in them.  They were touched by the pictures and asked if we just buy the dresses or do the stores donate them. (I thought I had told them all of this, but you know they are busy and have a lot of their own stuff going on so I can't expect them to remember my stuff too!)  I explained that most of our dresses are made from donated and gently used pillowcases from folks that want to help and have extra sheets and pillowcases they aren't using.  They thought they might have extra sheets and pillowcases-who doesn't?!  I asked him if I could email him a letter that he could share with his friends asking for donations.  "Of course!" he said!  He wants pictures included of those cute little girls receiving and wearing our dresses.  So tomorrow morning, I will be drafting a letter complete with pictures and sending it along!  He felt that his friends would be more than happy to help our cause!

It's so fun to talk about DAG!  It's easy when you love what you're doing!  Spreading the love!
